| James
Starr has been a professional painter, illustrator and printmaker for some
ten years, enjoying commissions from British Airways Highlife Magazine,
Levis, The Times, The Economist, Topman, among many clients. In 2004 a selection
of his work was included in Clin d'Oeil - a showcase of the World's forty-four
most influential and emerging contemporary image-makers. Represented by
David Simon Gallery since 2007.
James has travelled extensively as an expedition artist to four continents, developing his portfolio of images through sketches and photography. He works on canvas, paper and wooden panel and just about any surface that is flat enough to print on. Fusing simplicity and chaos the paintings and prints are created using original screenprinted material, photographs, freehand drawing, text and collage. James revels in the interwoven and the undefined, the popular and the sublime. This huge diversity of life and style from around the world is translated through a mix of the figurative and the abstract - stained and distressed canvases are screenprinted with bold images, a flicker of text or the drawn line. "His work combines all the elements that help fuel the spirit. His use of the recognisable icon draws you into his art which under closer inspection offers so much more. A glance into a counter culture, something slightly seedy and dangerous, a forbidden fruit we all secretly would like to take a bite of. Never stepping over the mark but always right on it, James knows how to press the right buttons….." James
