Richard Southall
For his first solo exhibition of sculptures, Richard Southall has included three new pieces made in cold-cast bronze, the first time that he has worked in this particular medium, alongside pieces in bronze. Cheetah, Rogue Male Elephant and Buffalo, the Old Bull are available as a limited edition of 95. This new medium, although similar in weight and appearance to traditional bronze, has a deeper patina and its finish is more suited to expressing the texture of these animals' hide.

Richard is not only an accomplished figurative sculptor and wildlife artist, but has also produced a number of extraordinary contemporary installation pieces.

Richard Southall's passion for wildlife and the environment, especially wilderness regions, has lead him to begin his exploration of the natural habitat of his subjects. A recent voyage to the Sea of Cortez provided a valuable opportunity for him to study whales and the wide diversity of creatures that inhabit the remote desert islands of the Baja peninsula.

Biography
Richard was trained by Stuart Osborne, who had a close association with Jacob Epstein as a student at the Royal College.

Field trips, research and travel are now more than ever proving central to his work. In 2002 the artist took an expedition voyage aboard a Russian ice breaker to the High Arctic island of Spitzbergen to observe arctic wildlife in its natural environment. Additional field trips are spent cruising the Irish Sea hoping to swim with basking sharks and diving in British and Mediterranean seas.

He has exhibited at the Society of Wildlife Artists; Annual Exhibition, London 1995; 1996, Nature In Art: International Centre for Wildlife Art, Wallsworth Hall, Gloucester 1996 and 2006; Wildlife Art Auction, Christie's South Kensington, London 1998; and the Royal West of England Academy, Bristol, 2003. In December 2006 he was a major participant in David Simon Gallery's Christmas Exhibition. Exhibition of his latest work with David Simon Gallery August 2007.
