Phil Lambert, born in the midlands, started painting in oils from a very early age. He studied Human Sciences at UCL in London, and went on to study Fine Art at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff; graduating in 2005. His work is united by a desire to create an illusion of space and light on a two-dimensional surface. Key to his painting is the accurate rendition of light. The composition and texture are also important. Often the paintings are very still in nature and exude a calming, meditative quality. The bowl series has been his longest running and most recent series of paintings. In these paintings the shape and nature of ceramic bowls has allowed him to work on the contrasts between flat spaces, hollows and curves, and also to focus on the subtleties of reflected light and colour. He acknowledges that key influences in his work include Willem Claesz
Heda, Euan Uglow, Jasper Johns and Giorgio Morandi. Represented by David
Simon Gallery since 2007. |
